My eyes popped open to a dark room, which meant Iâd slept a lot longer than Iâd intended. I picked up the prepaid phone Keir had given me to see I had no missed messages from him, which was a bit disappointing.
I really wanted to text him, but heâd told his mother I should wait to hear from him, so I planned to bite my nails and wait. I decided to finally do what was asked of me because I knew there was a good reason for Keir to have mentioned it.
I sat up and turned on the light on the nightstand, rubbing my eyes at the intrusion. It was ten-thirty at night according to the clock next to the bed, and I desperately wanted to know what had happened that day at Dannyâs funeral.
I was pretty sure my friends were worried and upset at my absence. There was no way theyâd be able to find me, and I couldnât chance calling them, so I gave up on that train of thought pretty quickly.
I couldnât remember any of their numbers off the top of my head, anyway. Iâd given my phone to Keir before Iâd left, so I considered calling my line to see if Keir would answer it, but something in my mind told me not to. Maybe the cops had put a tracer on my number and calling it would alert the police to where I was, and I definitely didnât want to do anything to put Mrs. Dearly in jeopardy. Sheâd been so kind to let me crash with her, and I didnât want to seem ungrateful.
I was hungry, so I went into the kitchen and opened the fridge to see a sandwich on a plate covered with a napkin. I wondered if it was for me, but I remembered Mrs. Dearly had told me there was stuff in the fridge and that I should help myself.
I was about to pull out ham and cheese to make something when someone walked into the kitchen. âOops! Sorry, young man,â I heard behind me.
I turned to see a man about my height, though he had a huskier build. His hair was silver, and he had a short silver beard that highlighted his shining blue eyes. The oddest thing was that he was wearing a pink kimono and white briefs. Clearly, the kimono wasnât his since there was at least four inches of exposed stomach where it was belted around him.
âI, uh, Iâm Dash. Iâm a friend of Keirâs,â I offered as if it were normal for the two of us to be meeting in the kitchen in our underwear.
He reached around me and removed the sandwich from the refrigerator shelf, placing it on the little kitchen table before he grabbed two beers and closed the door. He walked to the sink and turned on the light over it before he opened a drawer and pulled out a knife.
The man retrieved another plate from the cabinet and headed to the table, taking a seat and pointing to the one across from me without really making eye contact.
